How to use it well
Reading the result honestly
A calculator only does arithmetic — it cannot tell you whether you can afford the loan. To use it well, model the scenario and then sanity-check it against three rules:
- DSR < 60%. Total monthly debt commitments (existing loans + this new one) divided by gross monthly income should stay below 60%. Above that, banks decline; even licensed moneylenders should be cautious.
- 30/40 rule. The new monthly payment alone should not consume more than 30-40% of your take-home pay. If it does, pick a longer tenure or a smaller amount.
- 6-month buffer. After paying the new instalment, you should still be able to cover 6 months of essential expenses if your income stops. If not, reconsider the loan size.

FAQ
Calculator questions, answered
How accurate is this calculator?
The calculator uses the standard reducing-balance formula with simple interest assumption. The monthly payment shown is correct for the given amount, rate and tenure. Your actual offer may differ once we factor in the exact rate (12-18% per annum range) for your profile.
Why is the moneylender rate higher than a bank rate?
Banks weigh CCRIS strictly and decline anyone outside their narrow risk window. Licensed moneylenders (us) accept a wider range of borrowers — self-employed, freelancers, imperfect CCRIS — and the legal rate cap reflects that risk. Range: 12-18% per annum, simple interest, capped by the Moneylenders Act 1951.
What is "simple interest" vs "reducing balance"?
Simple interest is calculated on the original loan amount throughout the tenure (common for moneylender loans). Reducing balance is calculated on the outstanding amount each month (common for bank loans). For the same headline rate, reducing balance results in lower total interest paid.
Can I change the tenure later?
No, the tenure is fixed at the time you sign the loan agreement. You can settle the loan early at any time without penalty — you only pay principal plus accrued interest up to the settlement date.
Does the calculator include fees?
No, the calculator shows pure principal + interest. Stamp duty (a fixed percentage required by law) and any small processing fee are deducted from the disbursement and shown clearly on your loan agreement before you sign.
Why does the monthly payment go down when I increase tenure?
A longer tenure spreads the same principal over more months, lowering each instalment. But total interest paid over the loan life goes up. Pick the shortest tenure where the monthly amount fits comfortably below 30-40% of your take-home pay.
How do I know what I can actually afford?
Rule of thumb: total monthly debt commitments (existing + new loan) should stay below 60% of gross income (DSR — Debt Service Ratio). Also check that the new payment leaves at least 30% of net income for living expenses.
Does using the calculator affect my credit score?
No. The calculator runs entirely in your browser — no record is created anywhere. A formal application would create one CCRIS inquiry, but using this calculator does not.
